The approach

What is queer affirmative therapy?

Therapy that treats being LGBTQIA+ as a given rather than a problem to be explored, resolved or fixed. It matters practically: it means not spending your paid hour educating your therapist, and not risking a practitioner who quietly frames your identity as the underlying issue. Conversion practices are unethical and have been condemned by Indian mental health bodies, affirmative therapy is the opposite stance.

Before you book

What to check before booking queer affirmative therapy

The questions that separate a good fit from an expensive false start. Ask them before the first paid session, not after.

  1. 1

Look for a stated position, not a rainbow logo

Affirmative platforms say so explicitly and can describe their training. A flag in the Pride month post is not a policy.

  2. 2

    Ask about specific competence

Trans-affirming care, gender dysphoria, coming out to Indian families and navigating chosen family are distinct areas. Ask which the therapist actually has experience in.

  3. 3

    Check confidentiality carefully

If you're not out at home or work, the platform's data and billing practices matter more than usual. Ask what appears on statements and who can access records.
